Afghanistan Refugee Resettlement

As of mid-January 2022, the Birmingham and Berkley First Afghan Refugee Resettlement Program has fully furnished, from top to bottom, three homes for Afghan Refugee families. The Safi family has eight members including 2 adults and 6 children; the youngest is 2 years old. The Manish family has 7 members including 4 adults and 3 children. The Ahmadi family consists of 6 members including 3 adults and 3 children, the youngest of which is 10 months old. Each of these families has a unique story to tell about their journey from Afghanistan to the Detroit area. For one family the journey took several months, including time spent being housed on a U.S. military base in Wisconsin. Several of the adult family members developed close ties to the United States by working in the U.S Embassy in Kabul and serving as translators for the U.S. military.

However long their path to Michigan and however varied their backgrounds, our church has greeted all 21 Afghan family members with open arms, and thanks to your generous donations of household furnishings, they are all comfortably settled in their first American homes.

This note is to let you know what our resettlement program has accomplished to date and that many more donations are needed in order for us to help provide comfortable homes for as many refugees as possible. If you wish to donate, you will find below, a link to donate household furnishings. Click on that link and it will take you to the refugee resettlement SignUpGenius page where you can then select those items you wish to donate from a long list of home furnishings. Once you have signed up for your donation, contact Rich Teets (248-882-4696) to arrange for the drop-off of your smaller donated items or to arrange for a pickup of the larger donated items from your home.

Thanks in advance for your generosity,

Church and Society Ministry

As we as a congregation await our opportunity to assist in the resettlement of these Afghan families, Matthew’s Gospel calls us to service.

“I was hungry, and you fed me; thirsty and you gave me a drink; I was a stranger and you received me in your home, naked and you clothed me; I was sick and you took care of me.”

Chapter 25 vs. 35-36.
